In the small town of Manville New Jersey a little boy was found by Tommy and Jenny Sanchez in Jims Soft Pretzels eating soft pretzels. Tommy and Jenny Sanchez were the owners of the Jim’s Soft pretzels franchise. Tommy and Jenny quickly noticed that the child’s eyes were shut and not opening. At first they thought he was blind. Tommy and Jenny were very scared for the little boy. They asked around and no one knew of the boy, even the police were not aware of any missing children. They were worried and cared about him so they took him to the emergency room. When they got there the doctor told them he needed surgery right away to open his eyes or he could be permanently blind. Tommy said to Jenny, “I feel like I want to help that little boy, let’s adopt him.” The surgery took five hours. Once it was finished he could see. The doctor told them he was very lucky that he did not have to wear glasses. The parents were very thankful to the doctor for making their new son see. They spoke to the doctor about his recovery, paid the bill and left the hospital. When Tommy, Jenny and their new boy arrived home they realized that he had a bracelet around his wrist that said Miguel so they decided to name him Miguel Sanchez. After recovering from the surgery he had a normal child hood until the age of six when he started working at the family business which is the Jim’s Soft pretzels franchise. On Miguel’s first day, Tommy and Jenny were surprised how fast he could make pretzels. He could make 750 pretzels a minute! He was so fast that Tommy and Jenny fired all their other pretzel makers to make room for Miguel. At the age of twelve Miguel could make 1000 pretzels a minute! On Miguel’s eighteenth birthday his parents told Miguel that they were going to give him the Jim’s Soft Pretzels franchise for his birthday present. When they told him he was as happy as a circus clown. When they asked him if he would take over quickly said he would do it as long as he could change the name to Pretzel Man Incorporated instead of Jims. His parents were so happy he was interested in taking over the family business they let him change the name. Tommy and Jenny were already in their early sixties so they were ready to go into retirement and enjoy the rest of their life. When Miguel was 20 years old he met a girl named Shelly Cooper and started dating her. When he was 21 years old he and Shelly got married. A few days later Shelly started working at Pretzel Man Incorporated. Then one day a man pulled up in a shiny black Cadillac Escalade with an extremely long trailer on the back. There was some contraption on the trailer that seemed to be fastened securely. A tall older man jumped out of the Cadillac and walked into the pretzel shop. “Good day,” he said, “My name is Barry and I have something you need and can make your day!” “That contraption I have on my trailer is an assembly line I invented.” “I’ve seen you making pretzels here since you were a little boy, you fascinated me every time I came into your shop by how quickly you can make pretzels so you see you inspired me to invent a machine that was faster than you.” “Nothing is faster than me, Miguel said!” By now Miguel was getting very angry. When Miguel gets mad he is like an angry bull. His parents and Shelly who were in the next room came out to see what was going on and immediately tried to calm him down so he didn’t hurt the man. “Miguel, put that pretzel spatula down, you don’t want to do something you may regret, do you?” asked Shelly. Miguel started to calm down and paced the floor and said “well, you said this contraption or assembly line will make my day, but it sounds like this assembly line will replace me!” I would like to show you how this machine works and can help you make pretzels even faster. This will allow you to expand your business and make more money. “What is in it for you?” Miguel said. “Well, I would like to sell it to you for $10,000.00.” Barry said. “That is a lot of money to spend on something and I don’t even know it works!” Miguel said. “How about we have pretzel making contest?” Barry said. “Okay, come back here tomorrow at 9 am and you can set up your assembly line then and we will have this contest.” Miguel said. That night Miguel went to bed extra early to make sure he was well rested. No machine is every going to replace me, he thought! That night he didn’t get much sleep, he tossed and turned all night running the contest over and over in his mind. He woke up that morning drank a large cup of coffee and said “Shelly, hurry up! We need to get to the shop extra early I want to make a few pretzels before Barry gets there.” Shelly and Miguel hopped into their truck and raced to the pretzel shop to find Barry already there waiting to get in. “You are here early aren’t you?” Miguel said angrily. “We said to arrive at 9 am!” Shelly said, “calm down Miguel, don’t get yourself upset, let’s just have the contest, I am sure you will win!” Barry set up his assembly line pretty quickly. Miguel and Shelly got there necessary supplies ready. It was time for the contest. Tommy and Jenny came in to support Miguel. Tommy said, “ok, you guys ready?” “I will set a timer for 30 minutes and whoever makes the most pretzels wins,” Tommy said. They both nodded that they were ready. Tommy said, “Ok, ready, set, go!” Barry and Miguel both frantically began making pretzels. Barry seemed to be in the lead at first, but then Miguel stepped it into high gear. Miguel was sweating and his face was getting very pale. Shelly said, “you are winning Miguel, I knew you would!” Tommy then said “20 seconds left and began to count down.” Barry was looking depressed that his machine was not all that he said it was. Tommy then said “Times up!” “Looks like Miguel is the winner, he made 29,999 pretzels and you Barry only made 15,002!” Barry said, “well at least I gave it a try, where is Miguel? I would like to congratulate him, he may want to still by my machine, and I didn’t sweat and work as hard as Miguel did.” They all started calling for Miguel. Shelly said, “I think he went into the bathroom.” Shelly knocked on the door and said “Miguel, come out, Barry would like to congratulate you.” When Miguel didn’t come out Shelly went in and found Miguel on the floor. “Oh my God, call 911 quick Miguel is on the floor and not breathing.” Shelly said. The paramedics arrived to pronounce Miguel dead. The paramedics said Miguel appeared to have a heart attack. Everyone was so shocked in disbelief until Tommy remembered that day when they found Miguel, “I just remembered what the doctors said to us, remember Jenny?” Jenny thought for a while and said “Yes, I think I do.” The doctors said that the eye surgery they performed weakened Miguel’s veins and may someday weaken his heart. They all couldn’t believe Miguel died. At least he was doing what he loved, making pretzels.
